Job Overview

The Business Development Manager will be responsible for developing and driving the company’s business in the areas of energy, solar energy and renewable energy by offering and selling the energy, solar energy solutions and renewable energy business to potential customers, as well as spearheading the development of mini-grids in Nigeria and in the acquisition of all project approvals. The role will involve developing strategies for the acquisition of individual and corporate accounts while managing relationships with existing clients to maximize profitability and revenue. He/She will also be responsible for building strong relationships with stakeholders (local communities, government bodies and development agencies) as well as preparing RFPs and preparing investment profiles. .

Professional responsibilities

  • Own the ideation, evaluation and delivery of new and available business opportunities related to the arrival of electricity from mini-grids in rural communities in Nigeria, including data collection to delineate new opportunities, developing proposals for go/no go decisions, marketing and customer sales
  • Capture and institutionalize the company’s strategy to deploy new business opportunities for electricity, solar and renewable energy in a way that is a scalable portfolio across Nigeria.
  • Prospect potential business opportunities in the public and private sectors and convert these opportunities into real business
  • Identify and lead strategic partnerships between the public and private sectors, universities, suppliers, service providers and funders that support new business development, productive uses of energy and value-added services
  • Prepare investment profile – Prepare grant applications and commercial tenders and cooperate closely with government rural electrification agencies
  • Liaise and maintain strategic partnerships with Embassies, Foreign Trade Delegations and Chambers of Commerce in Nigeria to keep abreast of new investment opportunities including electricity, solar and renewable energy in the country
  • Represent the company at industry events, and identify and cultivate strategic partnerships
  • Coordinate with the project delivery team to deliver projects on time and within budget
  • Work closely with internal teams to ensure that business development work supports the company’s customer and business objectives (i.e. techno-economic analysis of projects and solutions, customer satisfaction surveys)
  • Support R&D efforts for new customer-facing business development projects, which may include customer surveys, sourcing and testing devices
  • Conclude new business by coordinating requirements; develop and negotiate contracts; integrate contractual requirements into business operations
  • Prepare related business proposals, reports and presentations
  • Work with the management team to identify and assess the market, new target customers, develop and implement a strategic sales plan
  • Monitoring/monitoring of industry-related events at international and local levels, including government policies
  • Identify and pursue opportunities in new and existing renewable energy programs/markets
  • Prepare compelling proposals, project business plans, and relevant marketing or project development materials to attract clients and project financiers
  • Summarize data insights, implement procedures to properly maintain and use a database, and communicate strategic implications and recommendations for customer experience improvement and growth opportunities.

Terms

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, energy economics, business management
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of relevant work experience in market segments and industry – renewable energy, energy/solar management.
  • Proven experience in trade delegations and trade missions.
  • Strong negotiation and networking skills and ability to build and maintain strategic relationships with relevant government agencies and regulatory bodies
  • Strong project management, organizational and communication skills to coordinate teams in a complex business environment, build internal support and momentum for projects, and interface with external partners
  • Thorough understanding of energy access and/or renewable energy industries in Africa
  • Evidence of having successfully developed and led the implementation of a new go-to-market strategy for existing and greenfield energy, solar and renewable products
  • Ability to understand the technical and application needs of the customer in order to promote the appropriate company product that meets the customer’s requirements
  • Ability to build an environment and a relationship of trust and credibility with customers, to understand customer needs and to position their needs in the competitive environment
  • Strong business analytics, sales skills and proven sales track record
  • Ability to assess and target potential customer penetration, attractiveness and accessibility to best allocate resources, verify opportunities and develop customer action/business plan
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, i.e. Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Experience acquiring new clients, new accounts and building relationships with C-level stakeholders.
  • Experience in managing sales and order targets.
  • Basic financial analysis and modeling skills are strongly preferred
  • Self-employed contractor requiring minimal oversight of deadlines and deliverables
  • Existing technical knowledge in solar PV, off-grid batteries and distribution networks in Nigeria strongly preferred
